Personal Technology and Student Engagement

Monday, Sept. 15, 2014, 2-4 p.m.
ED-5013 (St. John's); AS2036 (Grenfell)

Today’s classrooms are filled with an increasing array of mobile computing devices including cellphones, laptops, digital media players and digital recording devices. While students are often quite at ease with these technologies, they can prove to be a distraction in the classroom. Others insist that they do have a role provided the instructor provides clear guidelines and appropriately structures the task to ensure effective use of instructional time. This face-to-face session will explore how personal technologies are used by students and instructors in today’s university classroom. We will consider the effect of these devices on classroom engagement as well as instructional strategies that can be used to promote active, cooperative learning spaces in an era in which these devices have become increasingly ubiquitous.
