Dr. Michael Jackman (ISER, MUN) to present.

Abstract: In May of 1993, news broke that men in the St. John's area had been charged with committing 'indecent acts' after being video-taped on hidden cameras in the men's washroom of the Village Shopping Centre. The charges followed a two-month-long investigation headed by the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary whose surveillance of the washrooms came in response to complaints that children were being propositioned and offered money in exchange for sex. In the end, police concluded that there were no children involved in what was dubbed 'an adult homosexual ring'. This lecture presents preliminary research findings on the way the scandal took shape and its longevity as a news story in Newfoundland.
