Abstract: Personal health record systems (PHRs) are information systems used by individuals to manage health care records for themselves and sometimes others. They are especially useful to patients with chronic conditions and senior citizens who usually undergo continuous care. In this paper, we evaluated almost all the available PHRs for their usability by senior citizens. Our results show that many of the popular PHRs do not meet empirically established guidelines for interface design for this group of users. While there are many possible causes of the low adoption of PHRs, usability is one of the key factors for this age-group of users and the results presented in this paper points to many of the usability issues of PHRs needing attention. It can therefore serve as a guide to PHRs developers on areas of weaknesses to improve upon.
