Seniors' Day at Memorial University Botanical Garden

June is Seniors' Month across Canada and MUN Botanical Garden is celebrating!

Seniors are invited to visit MUN Botanical Garden and participate in our 15th Annual Seniors' Day at the Garden. The Friends of the Garden (FOG), in conjunction with the Botanical Garden, host this event every year.

Seniors’ Day was conceived by one of the Friend’s long-time members, the late Mr. Tom Sandland, who was also very actively involved with the Canadian Association of Retired Persons, Avalon Chapter. CARP has supported Seniors' Day since its inception in 2001.  

Garden staff, supported by the Garden's and FOG's volunteers, are offering a variety of activities for seniors to enjoy including:

Complimentary Refreshments
Seniors will be offered a delicious selection of homemade goods, including tea buns, coffee, tea and sweets.

Garden Tours 
Tours will be on-going all day and may include: the Newfoundland heritage garden, the Friend's wildlife-friendly garden, cottage garden, crevice garden, alpine house, perennial border, medicinal garden, shade garden, peat and woodland beds, compost demonstration garden and vegetable gardens. Highlights will include the rock gardens and the rhododendron dell.

Nature Hikes 
Take a stroll with a guide to Oxen Pond to feed the ducks, visit a bog, go bird watching, or just admire the wild flowers along the trail.

“Ask the Gardener” 
Gardening staff and volunteers will be on hand to answer gardening questions and provide helpful tips and advice. Greenhouse Tours Get a behind-the-scenes look at what is growing inside our greenhouse, including orchids.

Everyone is Welcome! 
Since its launch in 2001, Seniors' Day has evolved into a very popular, well-attended and well-received event. The positive feedback from volunteers, staff, the community and participating seniors has been tremendous and very rewarding. Everyone is welcome to drop by.

If your organization is planning to book your own transportation and bring a group of seniors to this event, please contact the Garden as soon as possible to confirm details. That way, we can ensure that refreshments and seating are ready upon arrival of your group and space has been allocated for your bus or van in the parking lot.
