Memorial University Botanical Garden, 306 Mount Scio Rd., St. John's

Celebrate Science Literacy Week on Tuesday, Sept. 22, at Memorial Botanical Garden. All programs are free and registration is not required. Everyone is welcome. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

10-11 a.m.
Family Nature Program: Discover our garden with nature exploration, storytelling, and songs. An excellent opportunity for parents (or care-givers) and children to have fun together while learning about nature. A respect for nature and all its “critters” will be emphasized. Education staff will lead you and your family on a leisurely guided stroll to Oxen Pond, where we will feed the ducks (duck food is provided), hike the batty bat trail and  looks for signs of hare, moose, squirrels and other creatures who make MUNBG their home. Parents are invited to bring along a healthy snack for story time.  Families of all ages welcome.

11 a.m.-12 p.m.
Grocery Store Gardening: Get a garden growing in your kitchen or on your window ledge using simple supplies from the pantry. We will create flower pots from recycled materials, sprout seeds of all kinds and show you how we make our own soil at Memorial Botanical Garden.

2-3:30 p.m.
Nature Hike: Explore the Newfoundland boreal forest and bog as you hike our nature trails with education staff.  Learn about our native Newfoundland ecosystems and the wonderful creatures who live here, including pitcher plants, lichens, black ducks and more, while you enjoy plenty of fresh air and exercise. Participants should dress appropriately for the weather, including comfortable footwear for hiking.
