It’s been a whirlwind final semester for Grace Fishbein.
 
And although she has wrapped up a B.Sc. in applied math and physics with a minor in German after an amazing five years at Memorial, she won’t be there to cross the Arts and Culture Centre stage with her classmates in May.
 
After she travels to Russia to represent Canada at the G20 Youth Forum in St. Petersburg, she’ll spend the summer with her family in the communities of Kitchener amd Waterloo before heading back overseas to Germany to participate in the German department’s field school at Heidelberg University. In between, Ms. Fishbein will visit universities to explore graduate schools for fall and has recently signed on with a basketball club in Germany.
 
“My coach at Memorial saw me play when I was in Grade 12 and asked me to come to the university for a visit,” said Ms. Fishbein. “I came to Newfoundland and loved it. I had been looking at schools close to my home in Ontario, but this was a unique opportunity to get away from home and start learning things on my own. It’s been a great experience and I would recommend it to anyone.”
 
She has spent the last five years tearing up the courts as a member of the Sea-Hawks women’s basketball team, volunteering for Sea-Hawks community outreach opportunities, and was recently named Athlete of the Year.
 
Ms. Fishbein also found time to participate in Memorial’s ambassador program, which provides student volunteers the opportunity to represent the university at activities and events. In a year that required Ms. Fishbein to attend four events, she completed more than a dozen, only turning down opportunities when they clashed with her varsity commitments, all while maintaining scholarship standing in her academics.
 
But like many young people coming to the end of their undergraduate education, she is now ready to move on.
 
“I’ve been here five years and I have loved every minute of it, but I’m ready to get out of my comfort zone again. I think moving overseas is a huge way to do that. So I’m excited about that.
