United Way campaign chairs named

By Melissa Watton | April 7, 2014

Memorial University's continued commitment to United Way has led the university to announce new campaign chairs for its workplace campaign.

Dr. David Wardlaw, provost and vice-president (academic), is the new honorary chair of the campaign and Dr. Linda Hensman, former dean, School of Pharmacy, is joining Karen Kennedy, internal consultant, Office of the Provost, as a co-chair of the United Way Campaign at Memorial. Dr. Hensman is replacing Dr. Gary Gorman, former dean and associate professor, Faculty of Business Administration, in this capacity. Dr. Gorman retired from Memorial last fall.

“I would like to thank Dr. Gorman for his contributions to Memorial’s United Way campaign in 2013 and wish him well in his retirement,” said Dr. Wardlaw. “I am pleased to report that employees at Memorial have continued in their support of the United Way campaign. Awareness and support of the campaign has increased at Memorial over the past year and we anticipate more fundraising activities at our three campuses in the upcoming year.”

This past fall during the payroll deduction campaign, Memorial University employees committed to donate over $28,600 to United Way in 2014. This is an increase of approximately $6,000 over the previous campaign.

“The increase in United Way support amongst Memorial employees is exciting,” said Ms. Kennedy. “The committee’s focus on raising awareness of United Way at Memorial is having a positive effect. I look forward to working with Dr. Hensman as we continue our efforts in this area and would like to thank Dr. Gorman for his support and assistance over the past year.”

“Supporting United Way is a practical way to help a wide variety of organizations both large and small," said Dr. Hensmen. "I am particularly impressed with the fact that United Way provides funding to many smaller organizations that don’t have a lot of ability to fundraise for themselves. I am honoured to be part of Memorial’s United Way campaign and look forward to the continued expansion of the program at Memorial.”

Established in 2004, United Way of Newfoundland and Labrador is the only United Way chapter in the province. The organization raises most of its funds through workplace campaigns and corporate donations. Funds raised by United Way Newfoundland and Labrador stay in the community and are directed to charities focused in the following areas: from poverty to possibility; healthy people, strong communities; and all that kids can be.

Memorial University is a founding supporter of United Way in this province. Its employees have contributed through United Way’s workplace campaign via payroll deduction, direct donation and through support of special events and activities.
