Letter to students

By Dr. Cecilia Reynolds | Sept. 2, 2014

Dear students,

As we begin another new academic year here at Memorial University, I wish to welcome you as new students and to welcome you back, if you are returning. Each of us has a role to play as members of our university community, and 2014 is the beginning of a special period of commemoration of the fact that our university is a living memorial for those who made sacrifices in war so that we could have the freedom to learn.

You are here to exercise that freedom by exploring, uncovering and learning as much as you can. You are expected to attend your classes and online discussion groups, and to complete your assignments, tests and exams. Our faculty, staff and students are working together to build an environment that truly supports the integrity and quality of your academic work and creates a respectful and inclusive community.

Memorial’s Sexual Harassment Policy, Alcohol Policy and new Student Code of Conduct, among others, are in place to facilitate a positive environment for all members of our diverse community. For all of our safety, we follow through with action for any breach of policy. I also encourage you to review Memorial’s Emergency Preparedness Plan and ensure you are aware of your role and the safety measures we must all take in case of an emergency.

We are all responsible for creating and maintaining our reputation as a vibrant university community. There is inspiring work being done here at Memorial, and you are an important part of it. Memorial is a place of excellence. You are a part of something excellent.

Best wishes for the 2014-15 academic year,

Dr. Cecilia Reynolds

Deputy provost (students) and associate vice-president (academic) undergraduate studies
