Walrus talk in St. John's

By Janet Harron | Sept. 4, 2014

Seven notable Canadians, including Memorial University alumni General Rick Hillier and bestselling author Michael Crummy, Memorial University's new assistant professor of creative writing Lisa Moore, and aspiring politician Seamus O'Regan, will take to the stage for the Walrus Talks the Art of Conversation at The Rooms this month.

The Walrus TalksMustafa have been selling out auditoriums across the country since 2012. The sessions have featured many of Canada’s brightest minds, including Margaret Atwood, Chris Hadfield, Clarence Louie, Roberta Bondar, Edward Burtynsky, Shad, Clara Hughes, Robert Bateman, Douglas Coupland, Shelagh Rogers, Jay Ingram, Deepa Mehta, Wilton Littlechild and Naheed Nenshi.

The Walrus Talks will be in St. John’s for the first time Thursday, Sept. 25, to discuss the art of conversation. The evening promises to cover everything from negotiation to conflict resolution to the art of the interview, with an emphasis on promoting dialogue.

The speakers’ series is produced by the Walrus Foundation, the charitable non-profit organization behind Canada’s general interest magazine The Walrus. The foundation carries out its mandate—to promote conversations on matters vital to Canadians—through these one-of-a-kind events.

“What makes the Walrus Talks so unique is the fresh ideas from speakers who reflect a wide range of viewpoints,” said David Leonard, director of events and special projects at the Walrus Foundation. “These Walrus Talks encourage dialogue and leave our audiences thinking, ‘I never thought about it that way.’”

Other speakers include Samantha Nutt, the founder of War Child Canada and author of Damned Nations, and Lisa Marie DiLiberto, co-founder of the Tale of a Town series and artistic director of Fixt Point. The event will also feature teenage poet Mustafa Ahmed, who explores, through verse, what it means to grow up in a marginalized community.

In 2014, Walrus Talks were held in Calgary, Vancouver, Montreal, Ottawa, and Toronto and have addressed themes such as water, human rights, climate change, energy, mental health and more.

The Walrus Talks the Art of Conversation—presented by the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers in partnership with Memorial University and The Rooms—will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at http://thewalrus.ca/the-walrus-talks-conversation/.
