Social science resident promotes inter-generational learning

Jessica Dawe, a fourth-year psychology student, recently completed a three week social science residency at the Bonne Bay Marine Station.

While in Norris Point, Ms. Dawe worked with the Bonne Bay Community Advisory Committee and Western Health to organize a Joining Generations Event on July 23. The event, which attracted over 100 people, included a local traditions component, lunch, music and a dance lesson. During the tradition fair, individuals were able to meet and speak with local residents about various traditions, such as setting cod traps, the making of jams and jellies, quilting and how to create and play the ugly stick. Individuals were also able to observe some sea critters from the Marine Station.

“The Joining Generations Event was the first of a series of intergenerational events to come this fall, with funding provided by New Horizons for Seniors Program,” said Ms. Dawe. “The purpose of these events is to celebrate our seniors and traditions with the intention of teaching younger generations these traditions with the hopes that they will not be lost. The events also encourage both seniors and youth to be actively involved in their community.”

While completing her residency Ms. Dawe was able to take part in many other activities, such as hiking Gros Morne Mountain, sea kayaking and enjoying local music. She says she met "many incredible" students, staff, tourists, and locals during her time there.

“It was truly an amazing opportunity and I would recommend applying for a student residency and availing of the courses offered at the Bonne Bay Marine Station to anyone.”
