Hearts a-thumpin’ on Day 3 of MUNdays

Oct. 25, 2014

Day 3 of MUNdays has something for everyone!

From Oct. 23-28, a full itinerary of spirit week events and activities will bring students, staff, faculty and alumni together to celebrate the university experience at Memorial’s St. John’s campus, Grenfell Campus and the Marine Institute during MUNdays 2014.

All day long today, Saturday, Oct. 25, the Community Service Learning event will take place at various locations. It’s your chance to give back to the world, and you’ve got options. Volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, help with the reforestation project in Pippy Park, help the Boys and Girls Club with a Halloween dance or assist Rainbow Riders with their horse stables and grounds. More that 60 students have already registered to take part. Do some good and feel good!

At the Marine Institute, high school students will be putting their boat building skills to the test in the second annaul model boat race competition. Teams will work together to build an operational ship model, applying physics and mathematical principles and competitively race the vessel in the Institute's flume tank. This event takes place at the Marine Institute's Ridge Road campus.

Also today, get your competitive spirit revved up as the volleyball competition continues at the Field House. The men’s Sea-Hawks play Laval University at 1 p.m. and the University of Montreal at 8 p.m. Red means go, go, go!

And, the Barnes House Charity Truck Pull is back! After a brief hiatus, this massive feat of strength, benefitting the Iris Kirby House, happens from 12-5 p.m. in lot 16/16A. This MUNdays crowd pleaser raises money for charity.

Tonight, a party is goin’ on! It’ll be a rockin’ good time at The Breezeway bar in the University Centre as you join hundreds of other alumni at the Super TSC Night Concert. Relive your memories of former concerts and parties held in the revered Thomson Student Centre (TSC) and dance into the wee hours. Hosted by up-and-coming local comedian Matt Wright, the concert features an all-star lineup with performances by Mick Davis, Barry Canning, and Shanneyganock. Doors open at 7 p.m.; show starts at 8 p.m.! Get your tickets here: http://etixnow.com/events/super-tsc-oct-25! This event is sponsored by Steele Communications, the Telegram, Johnson Insurance and MBNA.

Don't miss International Night at Grenfell Campus, a showcase of the many nationalities and cultures that make up the Grenfell community. Meet students, faculty and staff from other nations, sample a wide variety of international cuisines, view artwork, and enjoy music from other countries.  Please bring a non-perishable food item to support the Grenfell Campus Food Bank.  This event is open to the public.

Also tonight, a special reunion is taking place: The Muse 65th Anniversary Reunion will see former and current Musers reconnect and share Muse memories over food, beverages, and birthday cake at the University Centre, UC-2002, from 5-8 p.m. Newspaper staffers will peruse archives, look through old photos and celebrate this milestone in The Muse’s history. Don’t forget to register at www.mun.ca/mundays!

Be sure to follow along in the fun on the MUNdays Twitter feed @ilovemundays and with the #MUNdays2014 hashtag! You can also check out the MUNdays action on Facebook. There’s also an Instagram photo challenge -- $1,700 is up for grabs!
