Research In Focus: second round of videos released

By Krista Davidson | March 2, 2015

The second instalment of Research in Focus has been released. Research in Focus is a four-part video series that recognizes the research aspirations of each of Memorial’s campuses and faculties.

The second instalment features the deans and heads of the Faculties of Science and Arts, Memorial University Libraries and the Labrador Institute. Each share their aspirations for growing research and what impact that will have on the province leading up to and beyond 2020.

“Research is critical to innovation and development, and if we want to see a strong and diversified economy we have to invest in research in the North,” Dr. Keith Chaulk, director, Labrador Institute, says in the video. He says his vision for research will have a direct positive impact on the people living, working and studying in the North.

The Faculties of Science and Arts are also set to tackle major research goals by the end of 2020. As two of Memorial’s largest faculties with the largest number of academic departments and diverse areas of research, both faculties will focus on interdisciplinary research opportunities and improving Memorial’s research facilities.

The evolution in digital information has transformed how people access meaningful research, and Memorial University’s Libraries are not only working to model best practices but are also facilitating opportunities for research.

Each of the videos address Memorial’s goals for growing research, as reflected in the Strategic Research Intensity Plan 2014-2020. The plan builds on the Research Strategy Framework to initiate a historic generational transformation of Memorial University’s ability to accelerate the production and dissemination of scholarly outcomes, as well as strengthen its capacity to compete successfully for grants from Canada and abroad; intensify its ability to supervise master and doctoral candidates; grow the pool of highly qualified human capital necessary for building Newfoundland and Labrador, and Canada; and enhance its capacity to address the research priorities of government, industry and society at large in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Students, staff and faculty members can view the series here. The third instalment will be released March 16 and will feature the research aspirations of the Schools of Pharmacy, Nursing, Music and Faculty of Business Administration.
