New bike racks on St. John’s campus

By Michelle Osmond | Sept. 25, 2015

Memorial is improving its facilities for cyclists coming to the St. John’s campus.

Sixteen new bike racks have recently been installed for a total of 50 racks, 17 of which are sheltered. The style of racks was chosen by listening to concerns from cyclists and reviewing standards and recommendations from other universities and municipalities.

The selection of new locations focused on sheltered sites, high use areas and buildings without existing racks nearby. Locations were determined by reviewing results of an online bike parking survey and data from bike parking monitoring, identifying gaps in existing bike rack locations, and finding suitable sheltered locations.

“It’s great to see high use of many of the new racks already, especially in the sheltered locations,” said Toby Rowe of Memorial's Sustainability Office. ”We will continue to monitor bike parking to determine the best placement of racks and if there’s need for more.”

“We’re hoping these new racks will mean less traffic congestion in and around campus,” said John Browne, director, Campus Enforcement and Patrol. “It would be great to see more people using bikes to get to campus and hopefully these improvements will encourage that.”

Two bike racks have also been installed at the Battery Facility and there are five bike lockers near the Chemistry-Physics building that can be rented each semester.
