Freshman student wins award

A first year student at Memorial University is this year's winner of the Junior Jubilee Scholarship. Rachel Gardiner, who is originally from the Goulds, recently accepted the award from Education Minister Tom Hedderson.

The Junior Jubilee Scholarship is valued at $2,500. It is presented to the student who attains the highest overall score on high school public examinations.

The provincial government recently awarded scholarships to some of this province's brightest students. Government granted 201 scholarships - valued at least $1,000 each - to students preceding from high school to higher education.

According to a provincial government news release, more than $200,000 is being presented to these students on the basis of their performance on public exams.

Ms Gardiner is a graduate of St. Kevin's High School in the Goulds.
