Scholarship recipients honoured
Students in the Faculty of Business Administration were honoured on Friday, March 9, at the faculty’s annual awards ceremony. Seventy-seven graduate and undergraduate students made their way to the podium to accept nearly $90,000 in scholarships. Students were recognized for high academic achievement, community involvement, and service to the faculty or university, among other things.
Josh Quinton, president of the commerce class of 2007, participant in Inter-Collegiate Business Competitions and co-chair of Business Day, received a scholarship at this annual event. He explained that scholarships help students make the most out of their university experience.
“Scholarships really give students the chance to take advantage of all of the opportunities available to them without financial strain,” he explained. “University is about so much more than straight academics, and scholarships have helped me experience things like a semester studying abroad in Harlow, England.”
The scholarship ceremony included the presentation of several new awards. The Scott Hussey and Karen Joseph Memorial Scholarship in Business Administration, the A. Bruce Lemessurier Scholarship for Entrepreneurship, the Maureen Penney Class of 1982 Award and the Ernest C. Boone Award are all new undergraduate awards that were awarded for the first time on Friday, March 9.
At the graduate level, The Alex Faseruk MBA Scholarship for Excellence in Service was awarded for the first time at the ceremony. This scholarship is in recognition of Dr. Faseruk’s contribution to the Faculty of Business as a professor of finance and a coach of MBA case competition teams.
The award ceremony also honoured faculty and staff for their excellence in research, teaching and service. Dr. Jeff Pittman received the Dean’s Research Award, Dr. Kate Dupré received the Dean’s Teaching Award, Dr. Jeff Parsons received the Dean’s Service Quality Award (faculty). Ms. Susan Gardiner received the Dean’s Service Quality Award (staff), and Ms. Joyce Organ was awarded the Dean’s Citizenship Award.
“The students, faculty and staff who were recognized at the scholarship ceremony are exemplary members of the university community. I am proud of their accomplishments and I was delighted to recognize them publicly,” said Dr. Gary Gorman, dean of the Faculty of Business. “Our faculty has a tradition of excellence and each year our faculty, staff and students build on that tradition with truly outstanding accomplishments.”
The scholarship ceremony is also an opportunity to recognize supporters of the Faculty of Business Administration. Many scholarship donors were on hand to present their scholarships and meet the students.
“The Faculty of Business is fortunate to have a many benefactors who support our initiatives. With their generosity, we are able to provide opportunities for student development that wouldn’t otherwise be possible,” explained Dr. Gorman. “The awards ceremony is an excellent opportunity to recognize our student’s successes and it is also a time to say thank you to those who have been so supportive of the faculty."
