Minister presents faculty member with national literacy award
Dr. Marc Glassman, Faculty of Education, was honoured with the Council of the Federation Literacy Award this week in a ceremony at Stella Burry Community Services in St. John’s.
Members of the adult literacy community gathered as Darin King, minister of Education, presented Dr. Glassman with this year’s award. The award celebrates outstanding achievement, innovative practice and excellence in literacy.
“It is a privilege for me to have this opportunity to present Dr. Glassman with the 2009 COF Literacy Award,” said Mr. King. “Improving literacy levels will be achieved through the combined efforts of volunteers like Dr. Glassman, community-based organizations, the education system and government. Increased literacy levels lead to personal growth, as well as the growth of communities.”
Premier Danny Williams was not in attendance, but extended his congratulations, stating, “For more than 30 years, Dr. Glassman has been a staunch supporter of literacy development in our province. Whether inspiring university students in the classroom, or leading community-based initiatives, his dedication and belief in the importance of literacy has been an inspiration to those around him. His contribution to literacy skills is invaluable.”
Dr. David Dibbon, dean, Faculty of Education, was Master of Ceremonies for the event.
“Dr. Glassman has been a pioneer in the area of applying technology to the development of literacy in this province for over 30 years and he continues to be innovative and creative in advocating literacy at all levels of society,” he noted.
Dr. Glassman is the first person at a university level to have been awarded this honour.
“This award helps to demonstrate that the teaching, research and community service we do as part of our service here at Memorial is respected and appreciated beyond the confines of our university campus,” the recipient stated.
