Junior high students take over

By Michelle Osmond | May 3, 2004

The Faculty of Engineering's S.J. Carew Building recently looked as though it was invaded by junior high school students. As a matter of fact, junior high students are popping up all over campus for the 2004 Junior High Enrichment Mini Courses. The Avalon East District School partners with Memorial University, Marine Institute, College of the North Atlantic and other institutions to offer the courses to students across the district. The program began 10 years ago with 16 courses and 200 student participants. It's grown a tremendous amount since then. In 2004, there are 90 courses offered and 1041 seats available. 800 of those students are landing here at Memorial for courses that take place from April 19 until May 28.

Bill Tucker is the principal of District School. He says this is a one of kind program. “No other area in Canada offers the range of courses we do and has the number of student participants that we do. Our courses range from engineering to fine arts to linguistics.”

Students wanting to learn more about engineering got to take part in courses such as: Robotics, Robotics for Females, Cable Stayed Bridge, Soil in Civil Engineering, Environmental Civil Engineering, Strength of Materials, and Developing a Computer Game.
