Faculty of Business Administration becomes nationally accredited

By Jennifer Kelly | Feb. 17, 2011

The Faculty of Business Administration has been Certified in Management Nationally Accredited by the Canadian Institute of Management (CIM), a leading provider of nationally recognized, federally charted professional management certification.

This accreditation means that the faculty’s undergraduate degree programs automatically meet the academic requirement portion of the Certified in Management professional designation (C.I.M.).

Students enrolled in a faculty undergraduate degree program will automatically achieve the first requirement needed to obtain the C.I.M. designation.

The two steps remaining in the certification process are membership to the Canadian Institute of Management and the completion of two years managerial work experience. Co‐op or internship placements will count toward this required experience if they contain elements of managerial experience.

“This accreditation gives students an added incentive to choose one of our undergraduate degree programs,” said Dr. Wilfred Zerbe, dean of the Faculty of Business Administration. “The fact that our programs were seen as substantial enough to meet C.I.M.’s academic requirement proves that we a leader in business education.”

The accreditation will be announced in an upcoming issue of the national magazine, the Canadian Manager, and will also be promoted on the Canadian Institute of Management website. An official accreditation certificate was presented to the faculty on Feb. 14, 2011.

Paul Walsh, national academic dean, CIM,  pursued the accreditation process through the local branch, with the support of Dr. Zerbe.

“While I am excited whenever we accredit another school, it was very special for me to see the Faculty of Business receive accreditation,” declared Mr. Walsh. “Memorial and the Faculty of Business are a big part of my life, and I have a great passion for both."

The faculty is looking forward to a lasting working relationship with the Canadian Institute of Management.
