Glorious gift

A new exhibition at The Rooms featuring works by artists ranging from Emily Carr to Sir Frederick Banting has strong ties to Memorial. The Edwin R. Procunier Collection: A Gift of Canada includes some of the 372 paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures Mr. Procunier first began donating in 1985 to Memorial University’s Art Gallery. When management of the gallery was transferred to The Rooms in 2003, his donations continued. Mr. Procunier, a native of Lamaline, N.L., died in 2011 at the age of 83. He was a longtime supporter of the arts. The Procunier Family Scholarships in Music – four full-tuition undergraduate scholarships at the School of Music – were created last year through an endowment from Mr. Procunier’s estate. From left are Peter Caldwell, trustee of Mr. Procunier’s estate; Dr. Ellen Waterman, dean, School of Music; and Vicky Chainey Gagnon, director/chief curator, The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery Division. The Edwin R. Procunier Collection: A Gift of Canada runs until Oct. 18, 2015, at The Rooms. For more information, visit therooms.ca. Chris Hammond photo
